Hot Buttered Rum is a cozy and comforting drink, perfect for those chilly nights and holiday gatherings. I first discovered this delightful recipe about 25 years ago at a holiday party, and since then, I've added my own twists to it. It's like having dessert in a mug and pairs wonderfully with spiced cookies, cinnamon streusel, or any festive treat. It's also just perfect on its own—pure, warm bliss.
Spiced Rum or Bourbon?
When I'm in the right mood, I occasionally prepare the drink using spiced rum; however, the classic recipe calls for bourbon. Either way, I know you will enjoy every sip!
Make Ahead
I enjoy preparing the batter early in the Fall and freezing it, so it's all set for when the holiday season rolls around! It is an excellent holiday treat because of its delightful blend of nostalgic flavors and cozy, comforting aroma filling the house. It is perfect for sharing with loved ones.
Non-Alcoholic Version
You can easily make this recipe non-alcoholic by skipping the spirits! I love serving the non-alcoholic version to my grandchildren as a delightful warm treat that they enjoy.
Peppermint Cream Hot Toddy
Another delightful version is my Peppermint Cream Hot Toddy. It's a festive treat with peppermint ice cream, peppermint schnapps, and a candy cane stir stick. Perfect for warming up on a chilly evening and adding a touch of holiday magic to your celebrations!

Hot Buttered Rum Batter and Cocktail
Equipment
- 1 freezer container with lid
- 1 ice cream scoop
- 1 cocktail jigger (measure)
Ingredients
- 3 sticks of salted butter
- 1 ½ cup powdered sugar
- 2 cups packed brown sugar
- 3 teaspoons cinnamon
- 3 teaspoons nutmeg
- 1- gallon vanilla ice cream
- Spiced Rum One jigger per glass
Instructions
For The Ice Cream Batter
- Allow the ice cream to sit at room temperature while preparing the other ingredients. Using very soft butter, blend the first five ingredients until nicely incorporated.Add the softened ice cream and mix well. The batter may be a little runny and chunky, but this is fine, as the chunks of butter melt beautifully in the hot water. Freeze the mixture in a plastic container overnight or until firm.
Hot Buttered Rum Drink:
- For the Hot Buttered Rum Drink, start by filling 8-ounce glass with boiling water, leaving about 2-3 inches of headspace. Next, add one generous jigger of spiced rum. Then, add one ice cream scoop full of the frozen batter to the glass. It's important not to stir the cream as it will flow over the sides.
- Finally, add a cinnamon stick and grated nutmeg. The order of adding ingredients ensures the right balance of flavors and the correct serving temperature. Now, it's time to relax and enjoy this exceptional treat!
