Heirloom Recipes for The Holidays
Bring the family together this holiday season with an heirloom recipe for hot cheese crackers made from scratch using my in-laws' family recipe. GG Evans made and served these delightful treats with Rice Krispies, sharp cheese, cayenne, and red pepper flakes at every holiday gathering. Mimi (Pat) Evans has continued this tradition ever since. These crackers offer a flavorful bite of cheesy goodness with a spicy kick!
My Twist
I added my twist to the recipe by shaping the crackers to resemble Cheez-Its! Rolling the dough out thin instead of making separate rounds saves time and they look adorable!
A Touch Of Nostalgia
Adding a touch of nostalgia, heirloom recipes like these bring more than just delicious flavors to our holiday tables; they carry the warmth of family traditions. These treasured recipes, preserved in our cookbooks, connect us to generations past, making each bite a celebration of our shared heritage.
Vivid Food Memories
I vividly remember eating these crispy, spiced cheese crackers during my first Christmas at the Evans family home. The first bite was not enough—they are so addicting that you can't eat just one! The Evans family's cherished fond memories of making and sharing this recipe are priceless. Please share it with your family to create a new holiday tradition.
Hot Cheese Crackers
Ingredients
- 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese shredded
- 2 cups flour
- 2 cups Rice Krispie cereal
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup butter
- 2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper Add more to suit your heat level
- ½ tsp red pepper flakes
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
- Cream together the butter and cheddar cheese.
- Gently stir in the flour, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne, red pepper flakes, baking powder, salt and garlic powder. Mix this slowly until incorporated, then continue stirring until the dough comes together. I recommend using your hands.
- Mix in the cereal and stir to combine everything.
- Divide dough in half. Roll thinly on a floured surface. Cut tiny crackers with a pizza or ravioli cutter. Crackers must be thin, about ⅛ inch, to create the crispy texture of this yummy cracker. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 13-15 minutes or until golden and crispy. Store in an airtight container.
